Stop the kernel from dropping packets when your NIC gets swamped
🧩 The Challenge
You look at netstat and see hundreds of dropped packets, but the CPU looks bored and the application isn’t even breaking a sweat. It’s maddening when your server has the overhead but the NIC ring buffer is getting slammed by a momentary burst of traffic.
💡 The Fix
Bumping up the maximum backlog allows the kernel to queue more incoming packets before it starts tossing them out. It’s a lifesaver for high-traffic web servers that hit those nasty micro-bursts.
sysctl -w net.core.netdev_max_backlog=5000

Increasing this value forces the kernel to hold a larger buffer of frames waiting to be processed by the protocol stack, keeping your connection count stable during traffic spikes.
