Stop parsing CSV data with fragile awk scripts
🧩 The Challenge
Dealing with CSV files that contain quoted commas is a nightmare because simple field separators just break everything. I’ve spent hours debugging broken scripts because a user put a comma in a city name field and blew up my column count.
💡 The Fix
Use a shell-native library or a proper CSV parser instead of trying to force standard splitting logic where it doesn’t belong. You can leverage the shell’s ability to read comma-separated data properly by piping it into a small tool built for the job.
while IFS=, read -r col1 col2 col3; do echo "User $col1 has email $col3"; done < <(sed 's/,"/"/g' data.csv)
⚙️ Why It Works
Pre-processing the file with sed to normalize the quotes before letting the shell handle the field separation prevents the usual mess. It makes the loop far more reliable than standard delimiters alone.
🚀 Pro-Tip: Use csvkit if the file is massive or the data is actually complex.
