NTP Issue: How to solve “Stratum 16 Sources Exist.” ?

In this post, we will see a common NTP error “Stratum 16 sources exist” and its solution how to solve it out.

I. Error

"Stratum 16 Sources Exist."

II. Solution

The above error message means either one or more NTP servers/peers mentioned in /etc/ntp.conf file is not providing a valid time source.

The solution is to check that all the NTP servers/peers are operational.

We can check system logs (tail -f /var/log/messages on NTP client and server) for further troubleshooting here.

Once verified the logs, we can identify which server/peer is not responding, and then you can try to telnet/ping the particular source, login onto that and troubleshoot further.
