Track down why your system load is spiking in real time

🧩 The Challenge

You look at the load average, see it’s hovering around 15, and wonder which specific process is throwing a tantrum at this exact second. Nobody has time to scroll through a frozen top output hoping to catch the culprit in the act.

💡 The Fix

Use the watch command paired with a filtered process listing to get a clear, live snapshot of your top resource consumers. It stops the guessing game when you’re under the gun during an outage.

watch -n 1 'ps -eo pid,ppid,cmd,%mem,%cpu --sort=-%cpu | head -n 11'

⚙️ Why It Works

By telling ps to sort the output based on CPU usage before the watch utility refreshes it, you’re basically building your own custom real-time dashboard. It filters out the noise and keeps the greediest processes at the very top of your screen.

🚀 Pro-Tip: Swap out –sort=-%cpu for –sort=-rss if you’re trying to figure out which process is actively eating your RAM instead.
