Stop your server from tanking when it runs out of entropy

🧩 The Challenge

Ever had a web server that just hangs for no reason during boot or under heavy TLS load? I’ve spent days chasing down “random” latency spikes only to realize the system was just starving for random bits to generate cryptographic keys.

💡 The Fix

Increase your entropy pool threshold to stop processes from blocking while they wait for the kernel to gather enough noise. It makes handshake times much more consistent when things get busy.

sysctl -w kernel.random.read_wakeup_threshold=512

⚙️ Why It Works

By default, this value is often way too low, causing apps to sleep while the kernel desperately tries to gather bits from disk I/O and interrupts. Bumping this number lets your processes wake up and get back to work faster.

🚀 Pro-Tip: Install haveged or rng-tools if your hardware doesn’t provide enough noise; it’s a lifesaver for VMs that have zero entropy.
