Stop your logs from drowning in irrelevant noise with awk ranges

🧩 The Challenge

You’re staring at a massive web server log, trying to debug a specific request spike that happened between 2:00 and 2:05 AM. Scrolling through two million lines of unrelated traffic makes my eyes glaze over every single time.

💡 The Fix

Use awk’s range pattern feature to extract only the block of time you actually care about. It’s way cleaner than trying to chain together a dozen greps or manual head/tail math.

awk '/02:00:00/,/02:05:00/' access.log

⚙️ Why It Works

Setting a range like this tells awk to start printing lines once it matches the first regex and keep going until it hits the second one. It’s essentially an on/off switch for the output stream.

🚀 Pro-Tip: Stick a pipe at the end and send it straight to wc -l if you just need a quick count of requests during that window.
