Stop wasting time manually stripping columns from CSV logs

🧩 The Challenge

Dealing with those massive CSV exports from vendor dashboards is a nightmare when you just need the IP address from column four. I’ve wasted hours trying to hack together weird cut commands only to have them break the second the input file format shifts slightly.

💡 The Fix

Use awk to just print the column you actually care about based on its position, ignoring the mess of headers and extra data you don’t need. It saves you from having to look at rows that don’t matter.

awk -F, '{print $4}' logs.csv

⚙️ Why It Works

Setting the -F flag defines your field separator so awk knows exactly where your columns start and end. It’s way more robust than standard cut because it handles whitespace and complex delimiters without blinking.

🚀 Pro-Tip: Pipe it into sort | uniq -c if you need a quick count of how many times each IP shows up in that specific column.
