Stop using grep to hunt for column gaps

🧩 The Challenge

You know the pain of staring at a 20-column log file where the delimiters keep shifting because of lazy formatting. Trying to target the right piece of data with grep usually ends up pulling in garbage from the wrong column.

💡 The Fix

Switch to awk and tell it exactly which field to print based on position rather than pattern matching the whole line. It saves you from those days spent fighting regex anchors that break when the timestamp length changes.

awk '{print $4}' /var/log/app.log | sort | uniq -c

⚙️ Why It Works

Setting the field separator or just relying on the default whitespace behavior allows you to slice through files with surgical precision. It ignores the noise in the surrounding columns entirely, which keeps your output clean.

🚀 Pro-Tip: If your log uses tabs, just pass -F’\t’ to awk to keep things from breaking.
