Stop typing your password when SSH agents lose their mind
🧩 The Challenge
You’ve been working in a terminal all day, everything is fine, and then suddenly you try to hop into a server and you’re prompted for a password. It usually happens right when you’re in a rush, and it’s always annoying to stop and figure out if the agent crashed or just lost your keys.
💡 The Fix
Use ssh-add to verify what your agent is actually holding, and force it to re-add your keys if they’ve been dropped. It saves you from that mid-day authentication panic.
ssh-add -l
ssh-add -K ~/.ssh/id_rsa
⚙️ Why It Works
Running the list command shows you immediately if your identity has been purged from memory, usually due to a session timeout or a weird terminal hang. Adding the key again with the keychain flag stores the passphrase in the OS vault so you don’t have to keep typing it.
🚀 Pro-Tip: Add a shell function to your bashrc to run that check every time you open a new tab.
