Stop sudo from throwing a tantrum when user accounts get deleted
🧩 The Challenge
You finally delete that old intern’s account, but then someone tries to sudo and the system hangs for ten seconds just to look up a non-existent UID. It’s embarrassing when the primary admin account starts lagging because of a stale entry in the group file.
💡 The Fix
Use vipw to audit your group and password files instead of letting the system trip over itself. It locks the files so you don’t end up with a corrupted database if a cron job tries to run at the wrong time.
sudo vipw -s
sudo vigr -s
⚙️ Why It Works
These tools invoke your EDITOR on the shadow copies of the passwd and group files, running a syntax check the moment you save and quit. If you make a typo that would lock you out of the server, it refuses to save the file.
🚀 Pro-Tip: Always keep a root shell open in a separate window before running this, just in case you manage to break your own user entry.
