Logging & Journald
Stop staring at raw logs when the trail goes cold
🧩 The Challenge
Trying to hunt down why a specific service nuked itself three hours ago in a sea of journald entries is enough to make anyone lose their mind. You end up scrolling through pages of noise just to find one timestamp that looks vaguely relevant.
💡 The Fix
Use the journalctl time-specific flags to jump straight to the window where things actually caught fire. It saves you from manual page-flipping and makes you look like a wizard.
journalctl -u nginx.service --since "14:00:00" --until "14:15:00"
⚙️ Why It Works
Passing these timestamps directly to the journal binary forces it to perform a binary search on the indexed files instead of reading the whole heap. It is significantly faster than piping to grep once the logs get into the gigabyte range.
🚀 Pro-Tip: Stick a –follow at the end if you want to watch the fallout in real-time.
