Stop hunting for hidden resource hogs with process tree snapshots
🧩 The Challenge
Dealing with a runaway process that keeps spawning dozens of child threads is a nightmare when htop is moving too fast to track. I’ve wasted entire afternoons trying to map which parent is actually responsible for the spike.
💡 The Fix
Use pstree to dump a snapshot of your process hierarchy. It clears up the mess immediately by showing you the parent-child relationships in a clean, visual format.
pstree -aps $(pgrep -u username processname)
⚙️ Why It Works
Adding the -a flag lets you see the full command line arguments, and -p shows the PIDs for every branch. It beats trying to decipher a jumbled list of pids in top.
🚀 Pro-Tip: Pipe it into grep if you are dealing with a crowded system, or use -c to compress identical child branches.
