Stop guessing which SSH key is actually getting you into that box
🧩 The Challenge
Dealing with a dozen different keys for a dozen different environments usually ends in a wall of Permission Denied errors. I’ve spent way too much time staring at auth logs trying to figure out why the server rejected the one key I was sure worked.
💡 The Fix
You can force your SSH client to list exactly which keys it’s offering during the handshake before you even try to login. It clears up the confusion instantly when you’re managing multiple identities.
ssh -v -o IdentitiesOnly=yes user@hostname
⚙️ Why It Works
Adding the -v flag forces the client to output the debug handshake, and the IdentitiesOnly flag stops the client from blindly trying every key in your ssh-agent. It’s the only way to be certain you aren’t leaking keys to servers that don’t need them.
🚀 Pro-Tip: Toss the verbose flag in your config file for specific hosts so you don’t have to remember the switch every time.
