Stop getting blocked by hidden SELinux labels when moving files
🧩 The Challenge
You ever move a config file from your home directory to /etc and suddenly the service refuses to read it? It drives me crazy every time because the file permissions look perfect, but SELinux is silently nuking the access.
💡 The Fix
Use the restorecon command to slap the correct security context back onto the file based on the directory it’s currently living in. It saves you from having to reboot or guess why the policy is freaking out.
restorecon -Rv /etc/your-service-config-dir
⚙️ Why It Works
Files carry their original security labels even when moved, so this utility resets those labels to match the default system policy for the target location. You’re basically forcing the file to inherit the personality of its new neighborhood.
🚀 Pro-Tip: Always run it with the -n flag first to preview what would change before you actually commit the update.
