Stop apt from holding back packages you actually want updated
🧩 The Challenge
You run an upgrade and apt tells you it’s keeping back a handful of packages like it’s doing you a favor, but you just end up with a mismatched mess of dependencies. It’s infuriating when you’re trying to patch a known security hole and the system decides it knows better than you.
💡 The Fix
Use the dist-upgrade command to force the solver to actually handle the dependency hell instead of just giving up. It lets the package manager intelligently add or remove packages to reach a consistent state.
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
⚙️ Why It Works
By switching to this mode, you tell the dependency resolver that it’s allowed to change package dependencies rather than just locking them in place. The standard upgrade command is intentionally timid to avoid removing anything, which is exactly why it leaves your system in that half-baked state.
🚀 Pro-Tip: Always run an update right before, or you’re just juggling outdated index files.
