Spotting the exact LVM partition backing your mount point

🧩 The Challenge

You are looking at a server with ten different mounts and need to know which physical disk or LVM volume is actually backing /var/lib/docker without squinting at mount outputs for five minutes. It’s infuriating when you just need to know if you’re about to run out of physical space on an underlying SSD.

💡 The Fix

Use lsblk with specific output columns to map your mount points directly to their parent disks or LVM volumes. It saves you from guessing which physical PV is hosting your data.

lsblk -o NAME,MOUNTPOINT,SIZE,TYPE,PKNAME

⚙️ Why It Works

Setting the PKNAME column forces the tool to show the parent device for each partition, effectively peeling back the LVM or encryption layer so you can see the hardware path.

🚀 Pro-Tip: Alias this to lsblk-map in your .bashrc and stop digging through dev nodes manually.
