Pull out specific config blocks with awk range patterns
🧩 The Challenge
Dealing with massive, messy config files where you only care about one specific stanza is a nightmare. I once spent an hour scrolling through a 5,000-line HAProxy file just to verify a backend block while my pager was screaming at me.
💡 The Fix
Use awk range patterns to grab exactly what sits between two markers, like a start string and an end string. It saves you from manual searching and keeps the noise out of your terminal.
awk '/start-pattern/,/end-pattern/' /etc/service/config.conf
⚙️ Why It Works
By providing two patterns separated by a comma, awk treats it as a toggle, printing every line starting from when the first pattern hits until it finds the second one.
🚀 Pro-Tip: Pipe the output to sed -e ‘s/^[ \t]*//’ if you want to strip out the leading whitespace from those indented lines while you’re at it.
