Pruning Unreferenced Dependency Bloat with APT Autoremove

🧩 The Challenge

Over time, systems accumulate orphaned packages that were installed as dependencies for software you no longer use, consuming disk space and complicating security patching. Removing these manually is prone to error and risks breaking active system libraries.

💡 The Fix

Use the automated dependency resolution engine within APT to identify and safely purge packages that were installed automatically and are no longer required by any currently installed software.

sudo apt autoremove --purge

⚙️ Why It Works

The autoremove flag instructs APT to traverse the dependency graph and remove packages whose reference count has dropped to zero, while the purge flag ensures configuration files associated with those packages are also wiped from the system.

🚀 Pro-Tip: Append the –dry-run flag to the command if you want to preview the impact on your system dependencies before actually initiating the removal process.
