Force apt to stop holding back your updates
Package Management (Apt/Dnf/Pacman Internals)
Force apt to stop holding back your updates
🧩 The Challenge
You run an upgrade, expecting everything to jump to the latest version, but apt quietly ignores half your packages because of dependency hell. It’s maddening to realize your server is stuck on an ancient library version just because a newer package had a minor conflict you didn’t even know about.
💡 The Fix
Use the full-upgrade command instead of just upgrade to tell apt to intelligently handle changing dependencies for you. This stops the silent holding back and forces the system to resolve those package conflicts properly.
sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade
⚙️ Why It Works
By default, apt upgrade won’t install new packages or remove existing ones if it would break a dependency, whereas full-upgrade is allowed to change the installed package set to satisfy new requirements. It’s the difference between being overly cautious and actually getting the job done.
🚀 Pro-Tip: Always run –dry-run first if you are dealing with a critical production box so you don’t accidentally remove something you actually need.
