Find that zombie process before it ruins your day
🧩 The Challenge
You look at your load average and it’s climbing, but every time you run top, the process list looks completely normal. Turns out, some defunct zombie process is lurking in the background, stuck because its parent didn’t clean up after it properly.
💡 The Fix
Use ps to hunt down any process marked with a Z status so you can track down the parent process that’s actually failing to reap its children. It’s the only way to clear out those phantom entries cluttering up your table.
ps aux | awk '$8=="Z"'
⚙️ Why It Works
By filtering for the Z flag in the process state column, you’re telling ps to skip the noise and show you exactly what’s dead but still listed in the process table. Once you have the PID, you can hunt down the parent process with a quick look at the status field or a follow-up ps command.
🚀 Pro-Tip: If the parent is PID 1, you’re probably looking at a container that isn’t handling signals correctly; restart the container and stop losing sleep over it.
