Extract columns from messy log files without counting spaces
🧩 The Challenge
Dealing with logs that have variable spacing between fields is a nightmare. I’ve spent way too much time hitting the spacebar to guess how many columns `cut` needs to chop.
💡 The Fix
Use awk to treat any amount of consecutive whitespace as a single delimiter. It handles those erratic, human-readable logs like a champ so you don’t have to worry about the alignment.
awk '{print $2, $5}' logfile.txt
⚙️ Why It Works
By default, awk splits lines based on any run of whitespace, which makes it significantly more resilient than the rigid field-based approach of other tools.
🚀 Pro-Tip: Pipe it into column -t if you want to make the output look like a proper table again.
