Catch zombie processes before they clutter your process table

🧩 The Challenge

You look at your load average and see it climbing, but top shows almost no CPU usage and you are losing your mind trying to find the culprit. It turns out you have a pile of defunct zombie processes sitting there doing absolutely nothing but taking up slots in the PID table.

💡 The Fix

Use ps to hunt down any process marked as defunct and then track down the parent process that is failing to wait() on them. This saves you from having to reboot the box just to clear out stale PID entries.

ps aux | awk '"$8" == "Z"'

⚙️ Why It Works

By filtering the state column specifically for Z, you instantly reveal every child process that finished execution but is still hanging around because its parent is dead or poorly written. The output tells you exactly which PID is dead and, more importantly, which PPID is ignoring its cleanup duties.

🚀 Pro-Tip: If the parent is PID 1, your init system is the one slacking, and it might be time for a hard restart of that specific service.
