Stop wrestling with complex variable naming in your loops

🧩 The Challenge

Dealing with a dozen dynamic filenames in a script usually ends in a messy pile of eval commands that’ll break the second a space shows up in your data. I’ve wasted way too many nights debugging variable names that ended up as literal strings.

💡 The Fix

Use bash namerefs to create pointers to variables, keeping your logic clean without needing to invoke the spawn of satan that is the eval command.

declare -n target=$1
target="some_new_value"

⚙️ Why It Works

Passing a variable name as a reference lets you read or modify the original variable directly from inside a function or loop. It turns a nightmare of indirect expansion into something that actually reads like code.

🚀 Pro-Tip: Check if your variable is a nameref using declare -p before trying to read it.
