Container Basics On Linux (Namespaces/Cgroups)
Stop unshare from leaving you stranded in a broken shell
🧩 The Challenge
Trying to debug how a process sees the network or filesystem without starting a full Docker container is a total pain. I’ve spent way too long stuck in a namespace where I thought I had root, only to realize I couldn’t even ping the gateway.
💡 The Fix
Use the unshare command to drop yourself into a fresh set of namespaces instantly. It’s the cleanest way to experiment with isolation without the overhead of a heavy container runtime.
unshare -n -r -f bash
⚙️ Why It Works
By flipping those flags, you get a new network namespace and a user namespace mapped to root, all wrapped in a fresh fork to ensure the environment actually cleans up. The kernel handles all the heavy lifting, making your current shell think it’s in a completely different reality.
🚀 Pro-Tip: Always keep a tab open in the host namespace if you’re messing with networking, otherwise you might lock yourself out of your own virtual interfaces.
