Networking & Firewall (Ss/Netstat/Iptables/Nftables/Curl)
Stop your port scans from getting lost in the noise
🧩 The Challenge
Dealing with connections that just hang indefinitely is enough to drive anyone up the wall. You sit there waiting for a response, but your firewall or a distant middlebox is just silently swallowing the traffic.
💡 The Fix
Use curl’s verbose flags combined with a custom timeout to force the client to actually report why the handshake is dying instead of leaving you guessing.
curl -v --connect-timeout 5 http://your-service-address:port
⚙️ Why It Works
Setting a hard timeout keeps your terminal from hanging forever while the verbose output exposes every failed TCP handshake attempt or dropped packet.
🚀 Pro-Tip: Pipe that to grep -E ‘Connected|Failed’ if you are debugging a flaky cluster load balancer.
