Stop your Linux box from ignoring TCP window scaling

🧩 The Challenge

Dealing with high-latency links usually means your transfers crawl even when you have plenty of bandwidth to spare. I wasted an entire morning tweaking app-level settings before realizing the kernel was throttling my buffers at a tiny 64KB.

💡 The Fix

Flip the window scaling toggle in your sysctl config to let your server negotiate much larger receive and send windows. It’s the difference between a trickle and actually saturating your gigabit link.

sysctl -w net.ipv4.tcp_window_scaling=1

⚙️ Why It Works

Setting this to one tells the stack to ignore the old standard limits and use the TCP window scale option from RFC 1323, allowing buffers to grow up to a gigabyte.

🚀 Pro-Tip: Check your rmem and wmem max values too, otherwise you’re just opening a wide door to a narrow hallway.
