Shell Scripting / Bash Tricks
Stop letting your bash scripts crash on empty variables
🧩 The Challenge
You’ve finally got a complex script running, but it hits one unset variable and suddenly your logic command is trying to delete everything in the root directory because of a stray empty string. It’s an easy way to ruin your day and usually happens at 3 AM.
đź’ˇ The Fix
Flip the nounset option on at the top of your script to make Bash blow up immediately if you try to use a variable that hasn’t been defined. It stops the silent failures that usually lead to full-blown disasters.
set -u
⚙️ Why It Works
Adding this to your shebang line tells the shell to treat unset variables as an expansion error instead of just replacing them with nothing. It forces you to actually define your environment properly rather than hoping for the best.
🚀 Pro-Tip: Use ${VAR:-default} to provide a fallback value if you want to keep using a variable without triggering the error.
