Package Management (Apt/Dnf/Pacman Internals)
Stop letting apt-get hold onto your disk space like a squirrel with an acorn
🧩 The Challenge
You’ve probably noticed your root partition filling up faster than it should, and it’s usually because apt is hoarding every single .deb file you’ve ever downloaded. It’s infuriating when you realize you’re out of space because of packages you deleted six months ago.
đź’ˇ The Fix
Use the internal autoclean and clean commands to purge those cached files without nuking your actual installed software. It’s an easy way to reclaim a few gigabytes without thinking too hard.
sudo apt-get autoclean
sudo apt-get clean
⚙️ Why It Works
Autoclean only deletes the packages that can no longer be downloaded, while clean wipes out the entire local repository cache, which is what actually bloats your disk. Running both keeps things tidy without breaking your system state.
🚀 Pro-Tip: Toss an apt cron job in /etc/cron.monthly so you never have to remember to do this manually.
