Process & Resource Monitoring (Top/Htop/Ps/Systemd)
Stop ignoring the process I/O wait state
🧩 The Challenge
You look at top and the CPU usage is low, yet the system feels like it is stuck in molasses and everything is hanging. I have spent way too long staring at load averages only to realize some runaway process was thrashing the disk.
💡 The Fix
Start checking the process wait status to see exactly which PID is stuck waiting for I/O operations to complete. It saves you from guessing which application is choking your storage backend.
ps -eo pid,user,state,wait,cmd --sort=-wait | head -n 10
⚙️ Why It Works
Adding the wait column exposes the kernel wait channel for each process, showing you the exact kernel function where a thread is parked. It beats guessing whether a process is deadlocked or just waiting on a slow network share.
🚀 Pro-Tip: Alias this as psio so you don’t have to remember the column flags when the server is actually burning down.
