Stop guessing your shell path when things go sideways

🧩 The Challenge

Dealing with a dozen different dev environments means I’m constantly running the wrong version of a binary because my PATH got mangled by some shell script. I’ve wasted hours tracking down why a system command wasn’t firing, only to realize I was pointing at a local bin I forgot I added three sessions ago.

💡 The Fix

Throw a small function into your bashrc that prints your PATH entries on their own lines. It makes the messy string actually readable so you can spot the junk immediately.

pathview() { echo -e "${PATH//:/\\n}"; }

⚙️ Why It Works

Bash internally separates your PATH variable with colons, so this simple substitution tells echo to swap those for newlines. Seeing it laid out vertically makes the precedence rules obvious instead of a wall of text.

🚀 Pro-Tip: Add this as an alias named ‘path’ and you’ll save yourself the mental overhead of parsing that long string every time you debug.
