Stop guessing what your zombie processes are actually doing

🧩 The Challenge

You look at top and see a bunch of processes sitting in a D state or hanging around as defunct zombies that won’t die. It drives me up the wall because they block everything and leave you staring at the screen wondering which parent process checked out early.

💡 The Fix

Use ps to hunt down the specific parent process ID that is responsible for these orphaned children so you can kill the root cause instead of the symptoms.

ps auxww | awk '{print $8 " " $2 " " $3 " " $11}' | grep -E '^[D|Z]'

⚙️ Why It Works

This command slices through the process list to show you only the blocked or zombie states alongside the process ID, which gives you the handle you need to actually do something about them.

🚀 Pro-Tip: If the parent is PID 1, your service manager is officially in a bad spot and a restart is probably your only way out.
