Stop grepping through binary garbage in log rotation files
🧩 The Challenge
Trying to search through a massive pile of compressed and raw logs usually ends with your terminal window turning into a scroll of unreadable binary vomit because you forgot one .gz file was in the mix. I’ve ruined more terminal sessions than I can count by accidentally cat-ing binary data.
đź’ˇ The Fix
Use zgrep, which is basically just grep with built-in awareness for compressed files, so you can search your active and rotated logs simultaneously without unpacking a single thing.
zgrep "ERROR 500" /var/log/nginx/access.log*
⚙️ Why It Works
By hitting the compressed files directly, you avoid the time-suck of manual extraction and keep your current directory clean of temporary junk files. It’s the kind of utility that saves ten minutes of context switching every time a production issue flares up.
🚀 Pro-Tip: Add -i to your zgrep command to catch those logs where the developers can’t decide if the error is “Error” or “ERROR”.
