Stop getting confused by process PIDs inside containers

🧩 The Challenge

Trying to track a process from inside a container back to the host kernel is a nightmare because the PID you see in your shell is just a lie fed to you by the PID namespace. I’ve spent way too long hunting for a process only to realize I was looking at the wrong map the whole time.

💡 The Fix

Use the process status file in the proc filesystem to reveal the real host-side PID. It saves you from digging through the entire process tree to find that one runaway thread.

cat /proc/<container_pid>/status | grep NSpid

⚙️ Why It Works

Linux namespaces map internal PIDs to host PIDs, and that specific field in the status file exposes the actual mapping for you.

🚀 Pro-Tip: Pipe that to cut or awk if you are automating your monitoring scripts.
