Environment & Shell Customization (Aliases/Functions/.Bashrc)
Stop fighting with nested shell session history
🧩 The Challenge
You ever run a handful of concurrent terminals and have them stomp all over each other’s history files? It’s a total headache when you go to pull up a command from five minutes ago only to find it’s been overwritten by a session you closed elsewhere.
đź’ˇ The Fix
Change your shell config so it appends history entries instantly instead of waiting until you close the terminal. You’ll stop losing those golden commands that save your hide during an outage.
shopt -s histappend
PROMPT_COMMAND="history -a; history -c; history -r; $PROMPT_COMMAND"
⚙️ Why It Works
Setting histappend ensures new lines are tacked onto the end of the file rather than replacing it, while the PROMPT_COMMAND hack forces a sync of the current memory buffer to disk before every new prompt appears. It forces every terminal window to share the same brain.
🚀 Pro-Tip: Stick this in your .bashrc and stop living in the dark ages of session-specific history.
